[Bookplate by F.A.C.] The bookplate depicts a lakeside scene in which a hotel is set among trees at the edge of the water. Prominent hills also give a sense of the surrounding landscape. This picturesque scene is framed by a border of trees. Amongst the leaves at the top of image is a scroll that reads 'Ex-Libris.' At the bottom of the image, an open book displays the words 'Rogers Rock.'. 2. [Bookplate for Albert Prince by Dempsey and Carroll] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross, with quarters one and four also divided per cross. Within quarters one and four, the sub-quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with three lions passant guardant (for England). Sub-quarter two is or (gold), with a tressure-flory-counter -flory, charged with a lion rampant (for Scotland). Subquarter three is azure (blue), charged with a harp decorated with harpy figure features, stringed (for Ireland). The entire escutcheon is charged with a bar dovetailed, or a label, a cadency mark indicating being the eldest son (during his father's lifetime). Quarters two and three have a barry of ten, or and sable (black), with a bend in the shape of a ducal crown (without the cap). Surrounding the escutcheon is a garter, with first French motto within. Above the escutcheon is a royal crown. Supporting the escutcheon at dexter is a lion guardant, charged with a label. At sinister is a unicorn rampant, also charged with a label, as well as a royal crown without the cap as a collar. Below the escutcheon is a ribbon, with second German motto within. The entire achievement is surrounded by very fine lines, giving the impression of shadow. 3. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 4. [Bookplate for Catholic Commercial Academy of Montreal, Wm Price, and U. E. Archambault by Geo. E. Desbarats] Black ink on white paper. The border of the bookplate comprises three layers: the outermost is an abstract floral motif on the four corners ; secondly is a geometric pattern of triangles ; the innermost layer is a plain line. Curlicues surround the words “Catholic” and “of Montreal.” The bookplate is a pre-printed form with space for the prize name, winner, year and date to be filled out. 5. [Bookplate for David Russell Jack] Black ink on cream paper with shiny surface. The crest features an armoured arm clutching a sword extending from a crest-wreath. Below is an esquires helm, from which extends mantling on either side. The mantling is light on top and darkens to black at the bottom. The shield is has a chevron with thin, horizontal, black lines. Above the chevron, the shield is charged with two crescent moons with the points facing upwards. Below the chevron, the shield is charged with the same arm from the crest, in this case tilted 90 degrees so that the arm is horizontal. While the crest arm holds a straight sword, the shield arm is holding a sword with a curved blade. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, block serif font on a curling ribbon. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in larger, black, sentence case cursive font. A second line features the date printed in smaller, thin, stylized black font. 6. [Bookplate for Francis Fortescue Knottesford] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four are azure (blue), a bend engrailed, or (gold), coticed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three are argent, cross engrailed, gules (red), in canton cinquefoil, azure (blue). The second pale is parted per quarter, in quarter one, a barry of eight, argent and vert (green), charged with a gryphon, rampant, segreant. Quarter two is argent, with a chevron, ermine, fimbrated sable (black), with two canons placed two over one around the chevron. Quarter three is argent, with a chevron, sable, charged with a bird displayed. Quarter four is azure charged with a lion rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a tyger passant atop a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing text. 7. [Bookplate for Gamble Geddes] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features half a fish hauriant showing a fin, gills, and a head with teeth atop a crest-wreath. Sable shield charged with three of the aforementioned fish heads two over one and an argent insecutcheon. There is a ribbon-like banner with the motto below the shield with curling ends. Each side of the ribbon is angled towards a downward point. On the left side is text in capitalized black serif-font. The right side of the ribbon overlaps the left and has text in the same font. Below the motto, the owner’s name is written in curling sentence-case font. 8. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 9. [Bookplate for Goodwin's Limited] A decorative border is printed in green ink. Inside at the top left is the Goodwin's script logo "G" on a maple leaf printed in green ink. Text is printed in black ink and three fonts, including the Goodwin's Limited logo script. There is a tear in the bottom right corner and a light "X" drawn across the plate in pencil. 10. [Bookplate for Heinrich Teuscher by K. Kleindienst] In brown ink on cream coloured paper with visible chain and laid lines, a plane is pictured above an image of a building, all of which is surrounded by a floral border, architectural features, and a gardener with a bag. 11. [Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 12. [Bookplate for Henry Torre] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon which is slightly askew, being tilted from the central vertical axis of the image. The escutcheon is parted per fess. In dexter chief sable (black), charged with a crescent above and a tower below, a bordure vair. In middle chief, azure (blue), embattled and counter-embattled, argent, with three sable roundlets. Above the partition charged with two stags proper tripping, and below with one stag proper, tripping. In sinister chief, argent, two bars, gules (red), in canton gules, charged with cross Moline, or (gold). In dexter base, barry of six pieces, or and azure, in canton, argent, charged with a chaplet. In middle base, sable (black), lion rampant. In sinister base, argent, sable with three lozenges, gules above, and four below. The rococo vegetative mantling above the escutcheon finishes on either side with a tassel and includes, at its center, a straight wreath charged with a gryphon passant situated atop a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's Latin motto, with his name printed below. 13. [Bookplate for J. H. Hagarty] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features an armoured arm holding on to a sabre. The arm is coming out of a crest-wreath. The shield is argent with a sable chief. The chief is charged with three white birds trussed. The bottom section of the shield is argent and charged with a tall, leafy tree. The tree has three roots extending out. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, block, sans serif white letters. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, cursive font. 14. [Bookplate for James Henry Browning] Centered text with multiple fonts in black ink. 15. [Bookplate for John A. Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Above the escutcheon sits a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet, gules (red), on a vizored helm with mantling. Escutcheon is divided per quarter. The quarterly field near dexter chief is argent (silver) with a lion rampant, gules, and near sinister chief, or (gold), is a dexter hand, erased, holding cross crosslet, gules. The quarterly field near the sinister base displays a fish naiant on water, vert (green), and near the dexter base, argent, is a lymphad in sable (black), azure (blue), and gules. 16. [Bookplate for John George Hodgins] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a displayed black bird on a crest-wreath. At the top left of the bird, next to the tip of its wing, is a small radiating sun with a face in the middle. There is an esquire’s helm surrounded by dark, feathery mantling. The border of the shield is similarly elaborate. The shield is argent and charged with an argent cross with thin black border around each rectangular section. The shield is also charged with five black flowers that have five round petals and a circular black center. There is a flower in each corner of the shield and one in the center of the cross with a thin, black, square border. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with curling, darkened ends. The motto is written in black, capitalized, serif font. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, sentence case, Gothic font. 17. [Bookplate for L. Emile Grothé by Aimé Dufesne] Black ink on white paper. Border has white outlines, shaded for a three-dimensional effect and is filled in with thin black lines. The top and bottom sides of the border indent in the middle with squared corners. The left and right sides of the border indent in the middle with rounded corners. The top half of the bookplate has diagonal black lines extending wider from the centre. The top left corner features a person wearing a feathered headdress and a sash holding arrows in their left hand and a bow in their right hand. They are standing on a decorative ledge connected to the border and sitting atop of an elaborate curlicue. The right corner has the same curlicue and ledge and a person in a long coat and striped hat holding a pouch stands atop it. Between the two figures is an open book. The bottom of the top half of the bookplate contains half a round map of the world surrounded by a thick border of the same style as the overall bookplate border. The owner’s motto is written across the map’s border in thin, capitalized, sans-serif font. A rectangular border of the same design sits in the centre of the bookplate. The top of the border features large, captitalized, serif block font. The font is white with a black background and white stripes surrounding that background. On either side of that text are half circle decorations in a vertical stack between two thin white borders. The centre of the rectangle within the borders has a grey background with capitalized, sans-serif block font printed on top. The font is black with a white outline and dark shading. Two shields hang below the rectangle on the left and right side. The shield on the left is argent with sable dots per fess. The top third of the crest is charged with two fleurs-des-lis. The central portion of the crest, featuring sable and argent stripes. is charged with a lion passant guardant. The bottom third of the crest is charged with three maple leaves with connected stems. The shield on the right is per pale consisting of sable and argent stripes and argent with sable dots. The left side is charged with two lions passant that are argent with sable dots. The right side is charged with a lion sejant erect and eight hearts, each of which are sable and argent striped. Between the two crests, hanging from the central rectangular feature, is a checkered black rectangle with white borders on the left, right, and bottom sides. White curlicues extend from the left and right sides. Similar curlicues, leafy decoration, and black strip adorned with small circles extend from the bottom of the rectangle. The background of the bottom half of the bookplate not covered with other decorative features has the same black stripes as the top half. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate are four books each, spines facing out. Next to the books on the left is a black inkwell with two feather quills in it. Next to the inkwell is a beehive on a wooden platform surrounded by five bees. On the right of the beehive is an oil lamp with a bright flame burning. Outside the bottom border, inside the indent, the bookplate creator’s name and date of creation is printed in thin, black, sentence-case, serif font. 18. [Bookplate for Lorne A. Pierce by Marjorie Sankey] Printed in black ink on thick yellow/brown paper with visible chain and laid lines. The facade of a building entrance is supported and surrounded by a large tree. The owner's name appears in the otherwise blank doorway and two horizontal strips on the surrounding columns appear to be blacked out by hand. 19. [Bookplate for Marcus Brown Westhead] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield quartered. First and fourth quarter, argent, two barrulets dancette sable, between three Saracens' heads couped at the shoulders proper, wreathed round the temples, of the first and second. Second and third quarter, azure, on a fesse argent, between three martlets in chief, and the Roman fasces erect surmounting two swords in saltire, and encircled by a chaplet in base or, three chess-rooks sable. Center inescutcheon, party per chevron or and azure, in chief a mullet of six points lies between two crosses pattée of the last, and in base the front elevation of a chapel argent, the whole being charged with a crescent for difference. First crest, on a wreath of the colors, within a fetterlock or, a Saracen's head couped proper, wreathed round the temples argent and sable. Second crest, on a wreath of the colours, a demi-eagle displayed with two heads azure, charged on the breast with the fasces, swords, and chaplet, as in the arms. The escutcheon is surrounded by mantling and below a banner bears the motto 'ORA ET LABORA.'. 20.
